The Training Cave

The mountain is cold. Colder than anything I’ve ever experienced. We’re led down into its depths, a place of no natural light, the rocky tunnels only sparsely illuminated by fixings on the walls. Through the maze we go, winding our way down. Here, on this side, the place isn’t developed. Its corridors and caves are natural and rugged, not carved and made homely. There are no heating systems or houses or home comforts at all. It’s a desolate, cold, and silent place, far removed from the main chambers up above.

We encounter no one as we travel. There’s no sound but for our footsteps and breathing, and the occasional dropping of loose stones in the distance. We reach a wider chamber and Athena moves over to the far wall, her body blurring into the darkness. Moments later, she flicks a switch and the cave lights up, brighter than the tunnels that have led us here.

I look out, and see stocks of weapon affixed to one of the walls. Not only guns, but knives and spears, swords and shields. I see body armour and various protective garments used for fighting and battle. I see gloves and headgear used for hand to hand combat. On the other side of the room, dummies are laid out on the floor, used perhaps for firing practice. And right in the centre of the cave, a rudimentary white line has been painted onto the floor in a large circle about half a dozen metres in diameter.

She walks back over to us, speaking as she comes.

“This is where I trained, many years ago,” she says. “Ellie and Jackson and Cyra made such a difference down here, training soldiers and the occasional Watcher.” She looks at me directly. “Your namesake, too, played a big part before his death,” she says. “Theo Graves was a talented Watcher too. He taught me a lot before he was taken.”

It’s another place from history that I’ve yearned to see: the training cave for so many soldiers who helped defeat Augustus Knight’s army. It looks smaller than I expected, and far more basic. Nothing like the high tech training facilities on Eden.

Athena appears to read my thoughts once more as I peer out.

“We have only basic provisions here,” she says. “This isn’t like the Grid, where Cyra and Link and Ellie trained. My methods are not the same as what they endured. Do you know where a Watcher derives their strength?” she asks.

“Fear,” says Ajax firmly. “They need to master their fears,” he says.

She begins nodding, pacing before us, back and forward.

“Yes, Watchers need to learn to live with fear. If you can’t face what you’re afraid of, then you’ll never learn to focus and use your powers. But there’s more than that. As I told you on Eden, it takes desire and courage. You have to really want it, otherwise you’ll just turn and run away. I’ve trained many Watchers, and so few reach their potential. It’s very easy to give up, when the going gets tough.
